From richard.horton@sff.net Mon Mar 15 23:48:08 2004 Date: Thu, 15 Jan 2004 22:23:59 -0600 From: Rich Horton Newsgroups: sff.people.richard-horton, sff.discuss.short-fiction Subject: Summary: Paradox, 2003 It's a bit unfair to call this a "summary", as I saw only one of three issues of this new magazine this year (#3, dated Autumn). Paradox's mission seemed to be historically-oriented fiction, including straight historical fiction, fantasy in historical milieus, and alternate history. The issue I saw had about 35,000 words of fiction, 1 novelette and 6 short stories. The novelette, "The Fighters" by Steve Vance, was a decent time travel story about filming the fights of Jack Dempsey and the like, and altering history so they fight more often. Of the short stories, I think I preferred "The Savage Infant" by Sarah Prineas, set in an alternate 18th Century England with magic, and concerning the sudden appearance of a long-lost heir to Queen Anne.
